Wait Staff personel
One of the toughest way to make a buck is as a wait staff person. Most all wait staff employees work for a minimum wage of less than $3.00 an hour and are taxed on a percentage of sales at 10% which also may be a bit different from state to state and city to city to coincide with cost of living in certain areas. A food server and/or cocktail servers are also expected to tip out a percentage to the bartender and the bussers. This takes a huge chunk out of the servers wage. The average fare tip to a server is expected to be at least 15%. It is unfair as a patron of a restaurant to treat your server as your personal servant as you are not the only table this server has to tend to. Allot of people think if they feel they got poor service that they should not tip or tip less but the server still gets taxed on a percentage of your bill. It would be the kind thing to do that if you feel your service is less than adequate to kindly mention it to the server to allow them to cater better to your wishes rather than running them ragged and then stiff them on the tip. After all they still must pay out to the bussers, bartenders, and in some cases dishwashers as well. One can make pretty good money as a server if they are in a popular restaurant. The key to making money in any restaurant is turning tables. So, as a patron if you are skipping desert and drinks but having a long meeting with friends at a large table holding up the table so they cannot turn it over one would expect you to tip twice as much as normal unless you had already made previous arrangements with the management. If you have never waited tables before you probably have no idea what a hard and demanding job it really is. Considering you are getting paid a wage that is half of normal minimum wage and most of your income is based on gratuity received from the customer and not all restaurant patrons realize that the server is taxed on the amount of sales they make; it would be a kind practice to give a 20% tip. If bad service is a problem take the server aside and kindly express your concerns, short and sweet. I am sure you will get better service in this manner than treating the server as a less than adequate annoyance. Remember that that tip is not only for the server. The server breaks off to the bussers, bartenders, and dishwashers. And if your service is not 100% it may not be just the servers fault. The cooks may be behind. Bussers may be slow. The bar may be backed up. And your server is also serving 10 other tables. You will more than likely get better service if you make the server feel as if you appreciate what they are doing rather than making them feel as if they are beneath you or your personal servant. If you treat the server with a little kindness you will get better service and all will be an enjoyable dining experience. In this day and age a 20% tip will assure 100% service the next time that server serves you and your party. You should feel privileged to have someone serve you. If you have never worked that job before you would understand that most food servers treat you as well as you treat them. |
