The problem with getting rid of old boots

The problem with an old pair of boots is you just want to repair them and keep them rather than buy a new pair. These boots have walked miles. The have set foot everywhere in the United States and trudged through the snow and the desert sands. They are worn and torn. A little smelly but still comfortable. I can have them repaired. OPut on a new soul. Even have them turned into a work of art.
But my girlfriend insists I have to give them up. It is like an obsession, but she simply does not understand. I would rather frame them. Maybe have them bronzed.
I think she is feeling like the boots are more important to me than she is. But she does not understand. My boots and I have seen the world together, Now they are worn and maybe I should let them rest. Maybe have a ritualistic sort of burning and spreading the boots ashes over the streets of Las Angeles. Or leave them in some hidden corner in Fenway stadium. Or maybe throw the ashes at ground zero World Trade Center.
I sure will miss these boots. The shoe repair man says he could maybe make them last another 6 months but dry rot has set in and the boots just don't have many miles left.
I will miss my boots. We have done everything together.
And now to find a new pair of boots. A pair that is going to have to be trained and broke in. What if the new boots don't like my feet and try to blister me.
Well, shit- Here she comes smiling like a cat that just had tuna fish and milk. "Honey" she says; I got you a new pair of boots. Look they are almost like the old ones.
Why don't you throw those old boots away.
I could not bare the thought of getting rid of them. Then she throws them in the back yard with the Pit Bulls, Sam and Toby. SHIT! They latched onto them like they were a fresh steak or something. Oh my God , I can't bare to look.
Well, I must sit down and tie these boots up right and smile and say thank you.
Oh Honey I love them. They are just like the old ones. I will spend the next six months getting used to not having my old boots anymore. But hey it's O.K.// I am still making money and my girl loves me. I suppose the dogs will have some fun with the boots for awhile. I can throw them and play fetch with them. There is still some relationship with my old boots.
OH MY OLD BOOTS. I WILL MISS YOU WALKING WITH ME.
Good by old friends. Life goes on. After all they are just boots.
RIGHT?

Contributor's Note

I am starting to love my new boots. We just had our first scuff today and I really felt it when I rubbed the marks off them and gave them a good shine.
And the dogs use the old boots as chew toys. They are still strong and I think they are happy retired with the dogs as a chew toy. At least they are getting alot of attention.
